Of all the Sams I have had over the years – Spirit is truly my “heart” dog. He was last one born of 10 puppies, and stillborn at birth. I had to breathe life back into him, and as he was too weak to nurse, we hand-raised him. At 8 weeks he was still half the size of his littermates, yet so beautifully put together, and such a sweet nature, that Paul insisted we should keep him! Just goes to show, never give up on that tiny puppy – they can and will grow to be whatever size nature intended them to be!
On his way to earning his Canadian Championship Spirit won Best Puppy in Group 7 times and Best Puppy in Show. His toughest competition came from his own littermates: brothers Ca Ch Sancha’s Valerian, Ch Sancha’s Van Gogh Sitka and sister Ch Sancha’s Vixen in Velvet. Between them they won Best Puppy in Working Group a total of 15 times! Spirit went on to win the Working Group numerous times and had many group placements besides, earning the spot of #3 Sam in Canada (and was #1 Canadian Bred Samoyed) in 2001. Spirit finished his American Championship with back to back majors and Best Opposite over Champions. He is now retired from the show ring, though he still sires the occasional litter. He is now enjoying life as a Therapy Dog certified through St John’s Ambulance.
